Product Details
Brand: Salvation Army
The Salvation Army Triumphonic tenor trombone is a vintage, narrow-bore brass instrument manufactured in England by The Salvation Army brass instrument factory (operating under Salvationist Publishing & Supplies Ltd) from the 1920s until the factory closed in 1972.

Key Features and Design

  • Design & Bore: Built as a narrow-bore Class A Bb tenor trombone
  • Dimensions: Typically features a smaller bell size (around 6 inches) and a small bore size compared to modern orchestral trombones.
  • Engravings: Heavily decorated with intricate surface engravings, rose carvings on the joints, and the Salvation Army crest or "Blood and Fire" markings on the bell.
  • Slide Lock: Incorporates a classic slide lock mechanism originally developed and patented by The Salvation Army around 1904.

The Era: During the late 1920s, Salvation Army bands were expanding rapidly worldwide. Instruments built in 1928 were tailored specifically to give high projection and clarity for outdoor street evangelism and marching.

What style of playing is good for this instrument?

  • British Brass Band Enthusiasts: Because these were engineered explicitly for the tight, blending requirements of traditional British brass bands, players in that community value them.
  • Vintage & Oddity Collectors: Collectors love the "Triumphonic" line due to the heavy, detailed hand-engravings, unique slide locks, and the historical tie to The Salvation Army.
  • Jazz Players: Some modern jazz trombonists seek out 1920s narrow-bore trombones (often called "pea-shooters") for their incredibly bright, laser-focused sound profile.

This instrument has been ultrasonically cleaned and repaired in our shop.  The slide is in good working order for its age, but will benefit from thicker lubricants than other slides.  This instrument has been previously modified so that it can be played in modern A=440 tuning.  Comes with a case, but no mouthpiece.
