The CHI Brass JS Helleberg is a U.S. made precision copy of a mouthpiece that was once owned by Arnold Jacobs. This mouthpiece was passed on to a student of his after Mr. Jacobs passed. It has been altered from its original state, featuring rounding at the base of the cup and a less sharp rim. Jacobs had similar modifications made to many mouthpieces; however, most of these were given to students, while this particular one he kept for himself.
This mouthpiece performs wonderfully on York type horns, delivering a big, burly sound with plenty of fundamental tones in the low register and a singing quality in the upper range. While there are no photographs or records detailing how often, for what purposes, or even if Jacobs used this mouthpiece in the Orchestra, we make no such claims. However, it is worth noting that those who have tried the original have found it to be something special, which led to the creation of these copies.
For musicians seeking a wider cup and bigger sound, this may be exactly what you’ve been searching for. It is also notable for being larger than the fine copy of Jacobs' main mouthpiece currently available from another manufacturer.
